Hi sam,
It depends on what your ultimate aim is. If you are interested in getting the MFDS as an additional qualification to your pg then you dont need the IQE. If you intend to practise dentistry in the UK you need the IQE. Both these exams are 2 different entities.

The MFDS, is a basically required if you intend to pursue specialist training in the UK. It is a three part exam and in order to sit for part B and C you need 8 months of training in a hospital post. These are usually Senior House officer posts, clinical attachments or House officer posts. Getting an SHO post is competitive and not easy. You will be given temporary registration while you are working as an SHO. This registration is valid only for 4 years and is not renewable. You can read abt this exam in detail at the following sites.

http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/dental/fds/#about

http://www.rcseng.ac.uk/dental/fds/nacpde/overseas-qualified/index_html

This is the Royal college of surgeons of England website, it is open to the public and has a wealth of information regarding this exam.

The IQE is a licensing exam, which will give you full registration with the General dental council on a permanent basis. It is a three part exam and it is completely seperate from the MFDS. Once you are registered with the GDC you can practise dentistry in the UK. This exam is necessary if you intend to live and work as a dentist in the UK for more than 4 years. Once you have passed this exam you are eligible to work as a dentist in private and hospital posts. Futher information about the IQE can be obtained from the General dental council website. You can email them for an information packet.

Hi Micky,

To answer your questions,

1.Do i have to take up all the three Parts??

As per current GDC regulations you need to pass all three parts of the IQE in order to obtain full registration with the GDC. Employment with the NHS is a different matter altogether. It depends on NHS regulations whether they require full GDC registration or not. There are a few posts open currrently which do not require full registration with GDC, but most posts need full registration. However, this is not static and NHS can change its requirements anytime.

2.Do all the three parts take place in uk or i can take up part (A) in india?

Currently the IQE is available only in the UK. However, the GDC is planning to open centres in India. The details have not been published yet. Please check on the GDC website, www.gdc-uk.org/register/iqe.html

3.How to go about the IOE??
-how to apply for IOE
-Where to get the brochure/forms from??

Please visit the above-mentioned website. Contact details for the GDCare mentioned there. Please write to them stating your interest in applying for the IQE and requesting the Info Pack. They will post it to India for you. If you need it urgently please contact the British Council Library in your city. They usually keep one copy of the Info Pack for reference.

4.The syllabus of all the three parts and the books for reference??

All this is available in the Info Pack from the GDC.

5.How much approx. time does it atke to clear all tha three parts? Is it realy tough?

I cannot answer this question accurately. This depends on the number of applicants, number of venues and the frequency of the exams at the time you apply. Only the GDC can tell you that, and that too only after you have applied. My estimate is about 1 year from the time you apply (but this is a rough estimate based on my past experience, please check with the GDC for more reliable info)

Well regarding toughness, It is similar to the BDS exams in Basic Sciences and Clinical subjects. You have to be prepared, but it is not very tough. If you can pass the BDS exams, you can pass the IQE too.

6.What wud be the approx. expenditure in the whole process?

Well, again that depends on where you give the exams. The exam fees for the UK exams are about 1.5 lacs rupees (1950 pounds) for all 3 parts. I dont know their plan for exam fees in the Indian venues. If you plan to come to UK to write it then you need to add airfare and accomodation too. You can only come on on a 6 month tourist visa, so you cannot stay here for more than 6 months at a time, so repeat visits may be necessary.

cheers!

Hi Chandni,

To answer your questions,

The duration between the parts of the exam is not fixed. It varies based on the schedule for the year and the number of applicants. The schedule for 2005 is yet to be published. Please check the GDC website for that in December. I applied in Oct 2003, I wrote Part A in March 2004, Part B in August 2004 and I am writing Part C in November 2004. But again, this depends entirely on the number of centres and number of applicants. It is likely that the number of centres will be increased, but it is also likely that the number of applicants will increase.

Well, the best way to prepare is to go through the reading list in the GDC info pack. I will put more detailed tips once I finish my part C.

Well, there is no best time as such. In general i would advise the earlier the better. You dont want to qualify when 1000 dentists have already qualified before you in that year.

There is no need to stay in the UK for some time before writing the exam. You can fly in one day before and leave one day after if you want. Or you can write it in India next year if they open a centre in India. Whether you want to go back to India after each part depends on your finances and visa status. If your visa status and finances permit you to stay in the UK for 1 year, then you dont need to go back. Otherwise you will be forced to go back. Visitor visas are valid only for 6 months and they are non-extendable.

All the best
