A dentist who is not a national of a state within the European Economic Area (EEA) and who qualified outside of the EEA would normally need to pass the IQE in order to be entitled to apply for full registration with the GDC.
If you graduated as a dentist outside of the EEA and meet one of the criteria below, you are entitled to have your qualifications and experience considered for full registration without taking the IQE:
You are a national of an EEA state or
You are married to an EEA national (other than a British national) who is pursuing an activity as an employed or self-employed person in the UK.
Please note that registration is not automatic through this route. Each case is assessed on its merits.
If you are married to a British national who is working in Britain you will still need to take the IQE.
If you think you may be entitled to apply for full registration with the GDC, please refer to the registration section of the GDC website: www.gdc-uk.org/registerflow/dentists.html. This gives full details on who can apply for registration with the GDC.
An example of a dentist who would need to take the IQE is:
Indian passport-holder
Graduated from a dental school in India
Not married to an EEA national (other than a British national) who is working in the UK.
There are some exemptions for IQE Part A. These are listed in the Guidance for Candidates, which is part of the IQE application pack available at www.ukinindia.com.
