I must insist one thing……going overseas for PG is in my opinion is a decision that should be taken based on many factors……
one factor is the the choice of practice, where does one intend to practice after PG!
Golden Rule of Three Ps- “Post Graduate @ Place of Practice.”
So if one has the idea to settle overseas and practice there then its worth the trouble to post graduate in the place where one intends to practice…this will save us trouble of having to get licensure after PG(actually this is not the trouble…..) It will save us the difficulty of having to adapt oneself to the regional health practices after putting up the practice, know the medico-legal issues, patient management, prescribing drugs, communication with patient…..everything (actually THIS is the trouble….). When we have post graduated from one place and settle in another place …..all these and lots more should one face. All these are not learnt in a day. So it’s definitely worth the trouble to post graduate from the place where we intend to practice….
This does apply to the recent trend of going overseas practice, earn and then return to the homeland… here “The Golden Rule of Three Ps” becomes “Rule of 4 Ps”- Post graduate @ Place of Permanent Practice. So if an Indian intends to go overseas for professional reasons and then return back to India…..then he/she must Post graduate from India…get licensure from the country where one intends to go and return ..Then u know what!
This must not be taken as a rigid dictum but rather interpreted based on personal preference. Even before that it’s imperative that the dentist with overseas ambitions must evaluate the job prospects, adaptability of oneself to the region, security, and above all the job satisfaction…
This section is of even greater significance to lady dentists….cuz they have a chance of getting married with someone overseas and then they may intend to practice there...or she may have to go with her husband who might return to the homeland after….say 5 years…PPP or PPPP….. What’s your choice lady?
The most important thing is the security factor in a foreign land….one must know what to do, what NOT to do, where to approach, how to manage in case of necessity…they must know the location of their motherland’s embassy in the foreign land….also if possible some people from their own nation…some references of locals etc;
So much for security…..
That’s why it’s said-“East or West, Home is the Best.”
If one intends to practice in homeland, but wishes to get some latest clinical knowledge….then one can enrol in many workshops overseas (this is the current concept of Continuing Education...updating the skills and knowledge!)
